Destination Hot Dogs: 10 Franks Worth Traveling For – Dat Dog on Freret makes the National List!

By Linnea Covington Let’s face it, America is doggone crazy when it comes to hot dogs. According to study done in 2011 by the National Hot Dog & Sausage Council, we spent $1.7 billion on hot dogs in a year, with Los Angeles residents eating the most of any city – sausage fest! But just because you can get them everywhere doesn’t mean all hot dogs are created equal. They can come stuffed with crawfish, beef, pork or chicken, or topped with cheese, wrapped in bacon or served on any number of rolls. From dirty-water dogs to haute kimchi franks, these links are worth taking a trek for.

Dat Dog – New Orleans, LA

This popular New Orleans establishment used to be a tiny shack that got so full, they opened up in a larger space across the street. Even with 20 times the space, they still pack in hungry locals and tourists alike for crawfish sausages, smoked bratwurst, the Guinness dog and the turducken blend with turkey, chicken and duck. Former federal prosecutor Constantine Georges and Skip Murray, who is also aptly called “the hot dog guy,” run the joint, and, with all these credentials, it’s no wonder Dat Dog is dat destination. Just bring cash.
